A Catholic priest died after a heavy crucifix fell from the wall above the altar and struck him during an evening Mass in Guayaquil, Ecuador. The Mass was being livestreamed, which is why the footage spread so widely. We talked about it on the show; this post sticks to what has been reported.

What was reported. The Archdiocese of Guayaquil identified the priest as Patricio Sánchez of Perpetuo Socorro (Our Lady of Perpetual Help) church. Reports say it happened on a Saturday evening; KTTC's article, dated October 18, puts it on October 17, 2026, which is inferred from the publication date. The crucifix came off the wall above the altar and hit him on the head while he was celebrating Mass. Footage shows he did not appear to see it coming. Worshippers called for help while the stream continued. Gulf News adds that the priest was Father Patricio Alfredo Sánchez Molinari, the parish priest, and that it happened about 27 minutes into the Mass. It describes a large wooden cross detaching from the wall behind him. It gives no exact date either.

Where. Guayaquil is a coastal city in southwestern Ecuador, roughly 265 km (164 miles) southwest of the capital, Quito.

Who he was. Sánchez belonged to the Congregation of the Most Holy Redeemer (the Redemptorists), a religious order founded in 1732 that works in about 80 countries. His age was not given in the reports we read.

What is not known. Neither report gives a cause. Gulf News says it is unclear whether structural damage or faulty fittings played a part, and neither gives the cross's weight beyond calling it "heavy." Local authorities had not commented in the articles we read. Any claim about how heavy it was, or what failed, should be treated as unconfirmed until an official statement or investigation says otherwise.

A note on the video. The footage is widely shared and very hard to watch. We are not embedding it. We have linked our clip for context, and we hope the family and the parish are left in peace.

What the sources say

  • Details such as the cross's exact weight, who installed it, and why it fell are not in the reports we could find. If we guessed at any of that on the show, it was a guess.
